How to connect Spotify to ChatGPT (and control playback)
Published November 2, 2026 · By Port OS Team
The quickest way to connect Spotify to ChatGPT is the official Spotify app in ChatGPT. Mention Spotify in a chat, and ChatGPT asks you to connect your Spotify account the first time. If you also want the assistant to play, pause, skip or change volume on a Spotify Connect device, or you want to use Claude, you need a connector that exposes playback controls. Port OS offers one, with setup work described below.
Port OS publishes this article and runs that connector. The details here come from Spotify's announcement and Port OS's own guides as of November 2, 2026. We did not benchmark either option, and we make no claims about speed or quality. Vendor features change, so check each vendor before you rely on a detail.
Option 1: the official Spotify app in ChatGPT
Spotify and OpenAI launched this on October 6, 2025. Spotify's announcement describes it, along with later updates.
How to connect it
- Open ChatGPT and start a chat.
- Mention Spotify in your prompt, for example "Spotify, make me a calm focus playlist."
- ChatGPT asks you to connect your Spotify account the first time. Approve the sign-in on Spotify.
According to Spotify, connecting is opt-in, and you can connect or disconnect at any time. Where the app appears in ChatGPT's settings, and whether your plan or workspace allows it, can differ by account. Check OpenAI's own help pages for your account type.
What it does, per Spotify
- You can ask for songs, albums, artists, playlists or podcast episodes.
- Free Spotify users can draw on Spotify's existing playlists, such as Discover Weekly and New Music Friday. Premium users can turn more detailed prompts into a personalized selection of tracks.
- Tapping a track opens the Spotify app, where you listen. Spotify's March 23, 2026 update says audio previews and full podcast episodes can also play through ChatGPT.
- It launched in English in 145 countries. Spotify's later updates added the U.K., Switzerland and the EU, and more languages.
Spotify's announcement does not say the app controls playback on your speakers or other devices, so we do not claim it does.
Option 2: Port OS, for device playback and other assistants
Port OS links your Spotify account and exposes it to AI assistants over MCP, and to your own code over REST. The Spotify connection supports:
- Searching for music and reading the results.
- Listing, creating and editing saved playlists.
- Play, pause, skip and seek on an available Spotify Connect player.
- Reading the current queue, adding tracks and starting a queue.
- Volume, when the selected device exposes it.
It works with ChatGPT, Claude and other clients that support remote MCP servers. See the ChatGPT setup guide and Claude setup guide, or pick your assistant in Link to AI. Because the same account can hold other devices, one chat can reach a Sonos speaker or your lights as well. The smart home article covers that side.
The honest setup cost
Port OS does not provide a shared Spotify app for this connection today. You create your own app in the Spotify developer dashboard and save its client ID and secret in Port OS. Then you approve access on Spotify. The setup has these requirements:
- App owner eligibility. The development-mode app owner needs an active Spotify Premium subscription for the app to function, including search and saved-playlist editing. See Spotify's quota modes.
- Allowlist. A new Spotify app starts in development mode. Only Spotify accounts you add to the app can sign in. A development-mode app accepts up to five users.
- Quota. Spotify counts and limits requests. See Spotify's quota modes and its July 2026 quota update for current rules.
- A player must be available. Playback needs a supported Spotify Connect device that Spotify reports as available. A restricted device can show up without remote controls.
The steps are in the Spotify setup guide. When you are ready, choose Spotify and follow the screens. Port OS is in alpha, so setup details can change.
Comparison
| Official Spotify app in ChatGPT | Port OS | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it works | ChatGPT | ChatGPT, Claude, other MCP clients, and REST |
| Setup | Mention Spotify, then sign in | Create a Spotify developer app, save its credentials, then connect your assistant |
| Recommendations and playlist ideas | Yes, per Spotify | Search and saved-playlist editing |
| Playback on a Connect device | Not described in Spotify's announcement | Play, pause, skip, seek, queue and volume where the device allows |
| Other devices in the same chat | No | Yes, such as Sonos and lights, if linked |
| Who can sign in | Per Spotify and OpenAI availability | Accounts on your app's allowlist |
| Maturity | Run by Spotify and OpenAI | Port OS public alpha |
You can use both. The official app suits quick recommendations. Port OS suits controlling a player.
Try it
After you connect, start small:
- "Use Port OS to list my Spotify players."
- "Find some jazz for dinner and queue five tracks on the kitchen speaker."
- "Pause Spotify on the kitchen speaker."
A reply of "done" shows that a request was accepted. It does not prove the speaker changed. Ask the assistant to read the playback state again, or look at the device. The media playback guide explains queues, playlists and playback targets. For the full list of what the connection offers, read the Spotify integration page and the Spotify user guide.
A saved playlist belongs to your library, and a queue belongs to a playback session. Editing one does not necessarily change the other. Spotify can also keep manually queued items when a new selection starts.
Questions
Can ChatGPT make a Spotify playlist? Yes. Spotify says its ChatGPT app can build personalized selections for Premium users and surface existing playlists for free users. Through Port OS, the assistant can create and edit saved playlists in your library, within your app's quota.
Can ChatGPT play music on my speaker? Spotify's announcement describes tapping a track to open Spotify. Port OS can send play, pause, skip, seek, queue and volume requests to a supported Spotify Connect device that is available. Results depend on the device.
Does it work with Claude? Yes, through Port OS. Claude connects to Port OS as an MCP server. See the Claude setup guide. We have not verified a Spotify option from Claude's own side, so we do not describe one.
Do I need Spotify Premium? For the official app, Spotify says Premium unlocks the more detailed personalized playlists. For Port OS, the development-mode app owner needs an active Spotify Premium subscription for the app to function, including search and saved-playlist editing. This app-level requirement is separate from Spotify's Web API player endpoints, which require Premium on the playback account. See Spotify's quota modes.
